What is Oceanteacher?

The objective of OceanTeacher is to support IODE training activities by providing training tools for Oceanographic Data and Information management. These tools were used traditionally during Training activities but can also be used for self-training and continuous professional development. Since 2006 OceanTeacher is also used as a repository for knowledge and training materials related to operational oceanography (GOOS) and marine meteorology (JCOMM).

The Ocean Teacher system is comprised of two components:

  • The OceanTeacher Digital Library - contains a wide range of data management and information management materials, including software, quality control and analysis strategies, and reference documents. The wiki-style Digital Library is build upon the MediaWiki software.
  • The OceanTeacher Classroom - contains courses on oceanographic data and information management. The OT Classroom is based upon Moodle software and contains a collection of outlines, notes and links to miscellaneous documents in the OT Digital Library. Some Courses in the OT Classroom are available without registration whereas other courses require registering. Students participating in "live" courses organized at the IOC Project Office for IODE (or other locations) will need to register. This will enable assistance by lecturers as well as communication with other students before, during and after the course.

Materials for the OT Digital Library are provided by a wide variety of oceanographic data and information experts. The OT Courses have been build with training materials extracted from course materials brought by lecturers to the group training courses organized by IODE, GOOS and JCOMM. If you wish to contribute material to OceanTeacher then please contact Peter Pissierssens, Head IOC Project Office for IODE (p.pissierssens@unesco.org)
